Tower crane operator cabs differ fundamentally from those of ground-based cranes: they are installed at the top of the tower (typically 20–60 m above ground level), their dimensions are constrained by the tower’s cross-section (standard sections are typically 1.6–2.0 m square), and operators access them via ladders (or lifts) inside the tower. In this high-altitude environment, it is necessary to ensure both operational comfort and safe evacuation in extreme situations.
Cab Size Requirements
Given the limitations imposed by the tower’s cross-sectional dimensions, the standard sets practical requirements for the minimum dimensions of the tower crane operator’s cab: the interior width shall not be less than 700 mm, the interior height (from the floor to the lowest point of the ceiling) shall not be less than 1,800 mm, and the floor area of the cab shall not be less than 1.0 m². The clear width of the entrance opening shall be no less than 450 mm, and the clear height shall be no less than 1,500 mm. The lower edge of the front wall glass shall be no more than 700 mm above the floor to ensure that the operator can directly look down at the hook and load while seated. The area of the front window shall be no less than 40% of the front wall area. An emergency escape skylight is recommended on the cab ceiling; the clear opening dimensions of the skylight shall be no less than 500 mm × 500 mm, and the skylight shall be capable of being easily opened from the inside (push-to-open or rotating type). Although the interior of the tower crane cab is compact, it should not contain any sharp protrusions; all internal corners should be rounded to prevent operators from sustaining injuries.

Field of View Requirements
Since the tower crane operator’s cab is located at a great height, the operator must have the widest possible field of view to operate the crane safely. The standard specifies the following field-of-view requirements: While in a normal seated position, the operator should be able to directly observe the entire process of the hook and load being raised and lowered. When the hook is located near the tower (at minimum radius), the downward angle of view through the lower edge of the front window shall not be less than 45°. Side windows (with an area of no less than 25% of the side wall area) should be provided on both sides of the cab to allow the operator to observe conditions on both sides of the boom during rotation. A rear window (or observation port in the rear wall) facilitates observation of the counterjib and the rear of the tower. When the cab structure obstructs direct visibility (such as when the cab of a large internal-climbing tower crane is blocked by the tower structure), a video assistance system shall be installed—with one camera each at the hook, the boom tip, and the rear of the tower, and the footage displayed in split-screen mode on the cab monitor.
Entrances, Exits, and Emergency Escape Routes
Up and Down Channels—Operators typically use the ladder inside the tower to climb from the ground to the operator’s cab. The ladder must be at least 300 mm wide, with evenly spaced rungs (220–300 mm). When the ladder exceeds 10 m in height, rest platforms must be installed at intervals of 6–10 m. Safety rope tracks (fall arresters) should be installed on the ladders, and operators must use safety harness hooks when climbing. For large tower cranes (height ≥ 50 m), a construction hoist should be used to reduce the physical strain of climbing.
Entrance to the Driver's Cab—The entrance to the operator’s cab should preferably be located on the rear wall or at the base of the cab. A handrail with a diameter of 25–35 mm should be installed at the entrance. The cab door should open inward or slide open (to avoid outward-opening doors obstructing the passageway around the tower). There should be a passageway with a width of at least 350 mm from the cab entrance to the operator’s seat.
Emergency Exit Facilities— The tower crane cab must have at least two escape exits: the main exit (entry door) and the emergency exit (roof hatch or escape opening in the rear wall). When the cab is more than 30 meters above the ground, a high-altitude escape descender (rated load ≥ 150 kg, descent speed ≤ 1.5 m/s; the descender must be secured to the cab floor or ladder platform) must be provided . Before using the descent device, check that the wire rope shows no signs of wear, the hook is secure, and the device rotates smoothly. Additionally, it is recommended to equip the cab with a safety harness, safety rope, and fall arrest device as auxiliary escape equipment.

Environmental Control and Safety Protection
Since the tower crane operator's cab is located at a great height and is exposed to intense sunlight and wind, environmental control is even more important than in ground-level operator cabs:
Air Conditioning System— Tower crane cabs should be equipped with air conditioning as standard. In summer, temperatures inside a tower crane operator’s cab can exceed 50°C due to direct sunlight (the greenhouse effect caused by the metal structure and glass). The cooling capacity of the air conditioner should be selected based on an air exchange rate of 2 to 3 times the cab’s volume, typically requiring 1.5 to 2.5 horsepower. The outdoor unit of the air conditioner should be installed in a shaded area outside the operator’s cab.
Thermal Insulation— The roof panel and the sun-facing side panels of the driver's cab shall be insulated with thermal insulation material (polyurethane foam or glass wool, with a thickness of ≥40 mm). The front and side window glass shall be made of eco-friendly insulating glass or coated with reflective insulating film, with a visible light transmittance of ≥70% and a solar heat gain coefficient of ≤0.6.
Lightning Protection—The tower crane operator’s cab is located at the top of the tower and must have reliable lightning protection. The tower crane’s steel structure itself can serve as a down conductor, but the metal components inside the operator’s cab (such as control cabinets and seat frames) must be securely connected to the tower. Insulating mats should be laid on the floor of the operator’s cab. The tower crane’s grounding resistance should not exceed 4 Ω. During thunderstorms, operators must immediately cease operations and leave the operator’s cab.
Vibration— Vibration-damping pads (rubber vibration-damping pads or spring isolators) should be installed between the operator’s cab and the tower to reduce the vibrations transmitted to the cab caused by wind-induced vibrations of the tower and the swaying of the suspended load. In accordance with ISO 7096, the weighted acceleration at the seat shall not exceed 0.5 m/s².
