KPT Cable Reel Track Flat Car for Heavy Loads

Cable-Reel Track Flat Car

Model: KPT Series; Load Capacity: 6–300 tons; Power Supply: Cable reel; Travel Speed: 20–30 m/min.

The KPT Series cable-reel track flat car is one of Kelude Heavy Industry's classic products. It uses a cable-reel power supply system that offers a simple structure, easy maintenance, and cost-effectiveness. The cable-reel solution requires no pit construction and has minimal demands on floor conditions, making it ideal for heavy-load, short-to-medium distance (typically under 100 meters) cross-bay transport. The cable is automatically paid out and retrieved via a pulley block and wire rope as the car moves, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

This series is particularly well-suited for heavy material transfer between bays in metallurgical, foundry, and machining workshops, and is one of the most cost-effective electric flat car solutions available. The control system can be optionally equipped with wireless remote control for flexible and convenient operation.

Product Introduction

The KPT Series electric flat car is a cable-reel powered unit. A cable chain is mounted on the car, with one end of the cable connected to the floor power supply. The cable is routed through a cable pulley block and wire rope into the control box, which then supplies power to the YZ motor on the car. The motor drives the car smoothly via a gearbox. The cable-reel power supply offers a simple structure and easy installation, with no special requirements for the workshop floor, making it a classic choice among traditional electric flat car designs.

Product Features

  • Simple, Reliable Structure: The core components are the frame, motor, gearbox, and wheels — no complex electrical system, resulting in a low failure rate and easy maintenance.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to conductor rail or battery power options, the cable-reel solution has the lowest initial investment and offers outstanding value for money.
  • Quick, Convenient Installation: No pit excavation is required — only cable support brackets or pulley blocks along the track, meaning short installation time and minimal disruption to production.
  • Built for Harsh Conditions: Suitable for high-dust, high-temperature environments such as metallurgy and foundries. The cable features a heat-resistant, wear-resistant jacket for a long service life.
  • Heavy Load Capacity: Covers loads from 6 to 300 tons, with larger capacities available on request to meet heavy industrial cross-bay transport needs.

Working Principle

The working principle of the KPT Series cable-reel electric flat car is as follows: The floor power supply (three-phase 380V) feeds power through a cable from a power box fixed beside the track. The cable runs through cable pulley blocks or a cable chain device. As the car travels along the track, the pulley blocks slide along the side of the track under the pull of the wire rope, automatically paying out or retrieving the cable. The other end of the cable connects to the car's control box, which supplies power via a circuit breaker and contactor to the YZ series motor (designed for crane and metallurgical duty). The motor drives the wheels through a gearbox, moving the car smoothly.

The cable length generally does not exceed 100 meters (longer lengths would cause excessive drag and rapid cable wear), so the KPT series is best suited for short-to-medium distance cross-bay transport. For longer travel distances, the KPC conductor rail or KPJ cable reel power supply options are recommended.

Typical Applications

This series of electric flat cars is designed for crane and metallurgical duty in harsh industrial environments. With its simple, reliable structure, economical price, easy maintenance, and straightforward track installation, it is a proven traditional electric track flat car solution, particularly well-suited for heavy-load cross-bay applications. It is especially suitable for transferring steel billets between the continuous casting bay and rolling mill bay in steel plants, transporting sand molds and castings in foundries, and moving large workpieces across bays in heavy machinery workshops.

Structural Composition

The KPT Series electric flat car consists of the following core components:

Frame: Fabricated from Q235B (≈S235JR) steel plate by welding, followed by annealing to relieve internal stress. Depending on the load capacity, a box-type or I-beam main girder structure is used, with load-bearing capacity optimized through finite element analysis.

Drive System: Equipped with YZ series three-phase asynchronous motors (380V/50Hz) designed for crane and metallurgical duty, with power ratings from 2.2kW to 15kW×2. The gearbox uses worm gear or hardened tooth flank gearing for smooth, reliable transmission. Heavy-duty models (above 150 tons) are fitted with a dual motor, dual drive configuration.

Wheel Assembly: Cast steel wheels with medium-frequency induction hardened tread surfaces (hardness HRC45-50) for excellent wear resistance and long service life. Spherical roller bearings are used to automatically compensate for installation errors. Depending on the track gauge and load capacity, 4 to 8 wheels are configured.

Cable-Reel Power Pickup System: Includes cable pulley blocks, a wire rope traction mechanism, and cable support brackets. The cable is YCW type heavy-duty rubber-sheathed cable, resistant to oil, wear, and weathering. The pulley blocks slide along the side of the track, with one end of the wire rope fixed to the car and the other end anchored at the end of the track, enabling automatic cable pay-out and retrieval.

Electrical Control System: The control box houses a circuit breaker, contactor, and thermal overload relay, providing overload protection and short-circuit protection. Standard configuration includes a pendant control with cable; wireless remote control (effective range 100–200 meters) is available as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ

Q: What is the maximum travel distance for the KPT series cable-powered electric flat car?

A: The standard configuration is recommended for travel distances up to 100 meters. Longer distances increase cable drag resistance and accelerate wear, so we recommend the KPC conductor rail power supply or the KPJ cable reel power supply instead. If long-distance cable operation is absolutely necessary, reinforced cables and heavy-duty pulley blocks can be used, but we advise keeping it under 150 meters.

Q: What are the differences between the KPT electric flat car and the KPC conductor rail flat car?

A: The KPT cable reel solution features a simple structure and the lowest cost, requiring no trench construction, making it ideal for short to medium distance transport. The KPC conductor rail solution requires trench construction but is not limited by travel distance, making it suitable for long-distance, 24-hour continuous operation. Cost comparison: KPT has a lower initial investment, while KPC offers a longer service life (as there is no cable drag wear).

Q: Can the KPT series electric flat car be operated by remote control?

A: Yes. The standard configuration includes a tethered control pendant, with an optional wireless remote control (effective range 100-200 meters). A PLC interface can also be integrated for connection to a centralized workshop control system. The electrical control system complies with JB/T 6127-2010 and GB 5226.1-2019 standards.

Q: What is the service life of the cable on a KPT cable-powered flat car? Is it complicated to replace?

A: Under normal operating conditions, the YCW rubber-sheathed cable has a service life of approximately 2-3 years, depending on operating frequency and environmental conditions. Replacing the cable is straightforward: pull the old cable out of the pulley blocks, thread the new cable through, and make the connections. The job can typically be completed within 2 hours.

Q: Can the KPT series electric flat car be used outdoors?

A: Yes. However, for outdoor use, the cable must be protected from water and sunlight. We recommend a weather-resistant cable sheath and a rain cover for the cable at the end of the track. The electrical control cabinet must have a protection rating of at least IP54. For long-term outdoor exposure, we suggest installing a rain shelter.
