Wire Rope Electric Hoist Safety: JB/T 9009-2014 Guide

Safety Device Requirements

JB/T 9009-2014 requires electric hoists to be equipped with a Lifting Capacity Limiter (automatic shutdown of hoisting at ≥110% of rated load), a Hoisting Height Limit Switch (automatic stop at the highest position), Travel Limit Switches for the travel mechanism, and Buffers. Control voltage must not exceed 48V. The hook must be fitted with a Hook Latch. The wire rope must retain at least 2 safety wraps on the drum. Braking torque must be at least 1.5 times the rated load torque, and the brake slip distance must not exceed 100mm.

Brake linings must be asbestos-free, and brake ring wear must be inspected weekly. The wire rope safety factor must be ≥5, using galvanized wire rope of a non-spinning, compacted construction.

Installation & Electrical Safety

Before installation, verify that the supporting structure has adequate load-bearing capacity. For stationary installations, the drum shaft must be leveled to within 1/1000 deviation. For trolley-mounted installations, the trolley rail must be straight with a track gauge deviation of ≤±2mm. The wire rope must be wound evenly on the drum without crossing or overlapping. When secured with clamp plates, each rope end requires at least 2 plates. The electrical system must be reliably grounded (Grounding Resistance ≤4Ω), and the control circuit must operate at safety extra-low voltage (≤48V).

The main power supply must include Short-Circuit Protection, and conductor rails must be fitted with Protective Covers. The Remote Control must feature an Emergency Stop Button and Interlock functions. The standard sets clear requirements for installation safety — the load-bearing capacity of the supporting structure must be confirmed prior to installation. Stationary hoists must maintain drum shaft levelness within 1/1000. For trolley-mounted hoists, the trolley rail must be straight with a track gauge deviation of ≤±2mm.

Wire rope winding on the drum must be neat and even, free from pinching or overlapping. When rope ends are secured with clamp plates, at least 2 plates per end are required, with Tightening Torque per specification — approximately 150N·m for M16, 250N·m for M20, and 400N·m for M24. For electrical safety — the control circuit must operate at safety extra-low voltage (≤48V). The main power supply must include both Short-Circuit Protection and Overload Protection.

Conductor rail power supply must be enclosed with Protective Covers to prevent accidental contact. The Remote Control must be equipped with an Emergency Stop Button and Interlock functions to prevent inadvertent operation. All electrical connections must be securely tightened against loosening. The earthing system must be reliable — Grounding Resistance ≤4Ω, with a copper grounding wire cross-section of at least 4mm². The control box must have a Protection Rating of at least IP54.

Inspection Intervals & Scrapping Criteria

Perform a visual inspection and functional test every shift. Conduct a thorough examination of the brake, wire rope, hook, and limit switch monthly. Run an Insulation Resistance Test every six months. A comprehensive safety inspection, including a load test and calibration of safety devices, is required annually. Structural components with cracks, brake rings worn beyond 50%, wire ropes exceeding wire break limits or with diameter reduction over 7%, and hooks worn beyond 10% or with throat opening increased over 15% must be scrapped or replaced.

According to the standard, safety inspections are divided into four levels. A visual inspection and functional test are performed every shift, including one no-load lift to verify brake reliability, wire rope spooling, and the hook safety latch. A thorough examination is carried out monthly, covering brake ring wear on the brake, wire rope breaks and lubrication, hook deformation and wear, and limit switch functionality. An Insulation Resistance Test (≥1MΩ) is conducted every six months.

A comprehensive safety inspection, including a load test and calibration of safety devices, is performed annually. Scrapping criteria for the Electric Hoist: any crack in a main structural component—such as the drum, reducer housing, or hook beam—requires scrapping. Replace the brake ring when wear exceeds 50% of its original thickness. Scrap the wire rope when wire breaks exceed the standard limit or diameter reduction surpasses 7%.

Scrap the hook when wear on the dangerous section exceeds 10% of the original dimension or when throat opening increases beyond 15%. The standard also requires that retrofits and major maintenance on Electric Hoists be carried out by qualified professional units, and that a new load test be performed after any retrofit. Kelude offers Electric Hoist maintenance services in accordance with the standard.

Electric Hoist Safety: FAQ

Q: What are the core safety requirements for electric hoists?

A: A lifting capacity limiter (trips at ≥110% of rated load), a hoisting height limit switch, travel limit switches with buffers, control voltage ≤48V, a hook latch, and at least 2 safety wraps of wire rope on the drum.

Q: What are the safety requirements for the brake system?

A: Braking torque must be at least 1.5 times the rated load torque, and the brake slip distance must not exceed 100 mm. Brake linings must be asbestos-free. Inspect the brake ring for wear weekly and replace it if wear exceeds 50% of the original thickness.

Q: What are the safety requirements for wire ropes?

A: The safety factor must be at least 5. Use galvanized wire rope of a non-spinning, preformed construction, with a diameter no smaller than the design value. Secure rope ends with clamping plates or wedge sockets—never tie knots. Discard the rope per ISO 4309 for wire breaks, wear, or corrosion.

Q: What are the electrical safety requirements for electric hoists?

A: The control circuit must operate at safety extra-low voltage (≤48V). The control box requires IP54 protection or higher. The main power supply needs short-circuit protection. Grounding resistance must be ≤4Ω. Conductor rails need protective covers. The remote control must include an emergency stop button and interlock function. All electrical connections must be tightened to prevent loosening.
