ISO 4301-5:2016 "Cranes — Classification — Part 5: Overhead and gantry cranes" defines the classification of duty groups for overhead and gantry cranes. The standard establishes 8 work duty levels, from A1 to A8, based on utilization classes U0–U9 and load spectrum states Q1–Q4.


How Crane Duty Groups Are Classified

ISO 4301-5:2016 divides overhead and gantry cranes into 8 work duty levels, from A1 to A8. The classification is based on two key parameters: utilization class (U) and the load spectrum factor (Kp). Utilization class U is determined by the total number of working cycles over the crane's design life, ranging from U0 (16,000 cycles) to U9 (over 5 million cycles) — 10 classes in total. The load spectrum factor, calculated as Kp = Σ[ni/N × (Pi/Pmax)³], is divided into four grades: Q1 (Kp ≤ 0.125), Q2 (≤ 0.25), Q3 (≤ 0.5), and Q4 (≤ 1.0). The work duty level is then read from the standard's classification table using the U and Kp values — for example, U4 + Q1 gives A3, U5 + Q3 gives A5, and U7 + Q4 gives A8.

Utilization Classes and Load Spectrum States

Utilization class U0 (16,000 cycles, occasional use) through U9 (over 5 million cycles, continuous 24-hour operation). Overhead cranes in general industrial factory buildings are typically designed to U4–U6, while those in foundry and casting applications are designed to U7–U8. For the load spectrum factor Kp — assembly workshop cranes typically use 0.3–0.4, warehouses 0.15–0.25, and foundry/casting operations 0.5–0.8. Once the work duty level is established, the manufacturer selects mechanism components accordingly, and the user develops the inspection and maintenance plan based on the same classification.

Material Selection and Duty Classification

For work duty levels A5 through A6, the main girder can be fabricated from Q235B (≈S235JR). For duty level A7 and above, Q345B (≈S355J2) is required. T-joint weld seams on girders rated A8 and above must be full-penetration welds, ground flush after welding. Stiffeners on structures rated A6 and below may use intermittent fillet welds, while those rated A7 and above require continuous full-length welds with rounded ends. End carriage connections on cranes rated A8 and above must use high-strength friction-grip bolts, M20. Cranes in duty classes A5–A6 only need an annual inspection; those in A7–A8 require inspection every six months, and units in A9–A10 must be inspected quarterly.
