Minimum Cab Dimensions and Space Requirements

The standard specifies minimum internal dimensions for cabs based on crane type and configuration:

Overhead and Gantry Crane Cabs — internal width of no less than 800 mm (single-seat) or 1,200 mm (twin-seat), and internal height of no less than 2,000 mm (measured from floor to lowest point of the ceiling). Cab floor area must be at least 1.2 m² (single-seat) or 1.8 m² (twin-seat). The access door must have a clear width of at least 500 mm and a clear height of at least 1,600 mm. The front wall inclination should be between 5° and 15° to minimize glare from the front window glass.

Tower Crane Cabs — internal width of no less than 700 mm, height of no less than 1,800 mm, and floor area of at least 1.0 m². Tower crane cabs are space-constrained by the tower mast cross-section, but minimum dimensions must still allow the operator to turn around comfortably. A top escape hatch of at least 600 mm × 600 mm is mandatory.

Visibility Requirements and Window Design

The standard sets clear visibility requirements: from the normal seated position, the operator must have a direct view of the hook and the full hoisting and lowering of the load, as well as the travel direction of both the Crane Bridge and the Trolley. Where direct visibility is limited by structural obstructions, a video monitoring system must be provided as a supplement.

Front window — the front window area must be no less than 50% of the front wall area. The lower edge of the glass (measured from the floor) must be no higher than 700 mm, allowing the operator to look directly down to the hook area from the seated position. Glass must be laminated safety glass or tempered glass with a minimum thickness of 5 mm.

Side and rear windows — where observation of both ends of the crane bridge is required, side or rear windows must be provided. Side window area must be at least 30% of the side wall area, and rear window area at least 25% of the rear wall area. Side windows must be operable, with an opening area of no less than 40% of the side window area to allow natural ventilation.

Wipers and defrosting — the front window must be fitted with an electric wiper covering no less than 70% of the front glass area. For cranes operating in cold regions, the cab must be equipped with glass defrosting or anti-fogging capability, achieved through electrically heated glass or warm-air defrosting.

Operator Workspace and Seat Design

Cab layout must be centered around the operator's seat:

Seat requirements — the seat must be adjustable in height (±50 mm) and fore-aft position (±80 mm) to accommodate operators of different body sizes. The seat backrest angle must be adjustable between 90° and 110°. Seat width must be at least 400 mm, with a seat depth of 350–450 mm. The seat must incorporate vibration damping, with a vibration transmissibility of no greater than 0.5 under working conditions (measured in accordance with ISO 7096 Earth-moving machinery — Operator seat vibration). Seat upholstery must be breathable and flame-retardant.

Control Console Layout — The main control console should be positioned directly in front of the operator's seat, with the table surface 700–800 mm above the floor and an inclination angle of 15°–30°. The joystick handle should be located 400–550 mm horizontally from the seat reference point. Display instruments (such as the Lifting Capacity Limiter and Height Limit Switch displays) should be placed within ±30° of the operator's horizontal line of sight, at a viewing distance of 500–800 mm.

Foot Pedals and Tread Plates — Foot pedals (e.g., the Long Travel pedal) should be positioned where the operator's feet naturally rest in front of the seat, 100–200 mm from the front edge of the seat. The included angle between the pedal surface and the horizontal plane must not exceed 30°.

Environmental Control & Safety Features

Operator cabs must be equipped with essential environmental control and safety equipment:

Temperature Control — In summer, the cab interior temperature must not exceed the ambient temperature by more than 5°C (or be maintained at or below 28°C with air conditioning). In winter, the interior temperature must not drop below 14°C. The air conditioning system must provide both cooling and heating, with air vents positioned to avoid direct airflow onto the operator's head and hands.
