Crane exports must meet the destination country's mandatory certification requirements. Key Points for CE Certification

The core of CE Certification lies in the design calculation report—the notified body will review every page of the EN 13001 Crane Safety Standard series, covering load combinations, steel structure limit state calculations, and fatigue life analysis. Many companies fail their initial review because the calculation report still uses the allowable stress method instead of the limit state method. Q: What is the biggest pitfall for Chinese manufacturers pursuing CE Certification?

A: The most common pitfall is insufficient design calculation documentation. Many manufacturers assume CE Certification is simply a matter of running a few tests and affixing the CE mark. In reality, the complete set of design calculations per the EN 13001 Crane Safety Standard is the core requirement — the notified body reviews every page. We recommend having a consultancy with EN experience pre-review your design files before submitting for certification.

Q: Does the CE certificate expire? Is it valid indefinitely once issued?

A: The CE EC type-examination certificate has no fixed expiry date, but it is subject to annual surveillance audits by the notified body. Any significant design changes must be reported to the notified body for assessment. If two consecutive annual audits are not passed, the certificate will be suspended.

Q: Is GSO certification mandatory for exporting to the Middle East? Can a CE certificate be used instead?

A: For GSO certification, you can submit your CE technical documentation as the basis to avoid duplicating the design review. However, product testing must still be carried out by a GSO-recognized local inspection body. In short: the CE certificate saves you the time and cost of the design review, but product testing and local compliance are still required.

Q: Certification requirements in Southeast Asia are less stringent — can we export without certification?

A: It may be legally permissible, but it is not advisable from a commercial standpoint. An increasing number of EPC projects in Southeast Asia are contracted by European, Japanese, or Korean engineering firms, and their technical specifications explicitly require CE or equivalent certification. We recommend obtaining at least ISO 9001 and ISO 3834-2 as the minimum certification baseline for export eligibility.

Export certification is not a one-time cost but a long-term investment. Start with CE (EU) and ISO 3834 (Welding) as your foundation, then progressively expand to GSO (Middle East), EAC (Central Asia), and ultimately achieve coverage across all major global markets.
