Standard Hand Signals at a Glance
Per GB/T 5082-2019, "Hand Signals for Lifting Operations," all crane operators and riggers must use a unified set of hand signals. The eight core signals are: Prepare/Attention (one arm raised), Hoist (palm up, moving upward), Lower (palm down, moving downward), Move Horizontally (arm extended to the side, sweeping), Emergency Stop (both arms crossed in an X), Micro-motion (fingers pinched together), Tilt, and Stop Work (both hands spread open).
Six Emergency Response Scenarios
- Load Drop: Hit the Emergency Stop Button, clear the drop zone, secure the area, and report for investigation.
- Crane Overturn: The operator stays in the cab, holds onto the control console, cuts off the Power Supply, and evacuates before rescue begins.
- Electrical Shock: Cut the Power Supply immediately (never touch the victim with bare hands), perform CPR, and call 120.
- Wire Rope Fracture: Press the Emergency Stop Button, keep everyone clear of the area below the load, and replace the entire Wire Rope (never splice or reuse).
- Brake Failure: Reverse the controls, apply emergency Braking, take the crane out of service, and inspect the Brake.
- Electrical Fire: Cut the main Power Supply, use a CO2 or dry-powder fire extinguisher (never water), and call 119.
Operator's Daily 8-Point Pre-Use Checklist
- Brake opens and closes smoothly with even clearance and no Abnormal noise.
- Wire Rope shows no excessive wire break, kinking, or crushing, and is properly Lubricated.
- Hook opening is not enlarged beyond 15% of the original dimension, and the safety latch works correctly.
- Limit switches in all directions respond accurately and reliably.
- Pressing the Emergency Stop Button cuts power and applies Braking to all mechanisms.
- Audible and Visual Alarm sounds automatically for at least 5 seconds before operation.
- Crane Rail and end stops are clear of obstructions, and end stops are securely fastened.
- All buttons on the Control Grip and remote control function properly.
FAQ
Q: Are the Ten No-Lift Rules a legal requirement or just company policy? What are the consequences of violating them?
A: The Ten No-Lift Rules are a practical expression of the mandatory provisions in ISO 12480, "Safety Rules for Lifting Appliances." Violating them means violating national safety standards. If an accident occurs, both the operator and the company's safety management will be held liable, which may result in administrative fines, suspension of operations, or even criminal prosecution.
Q: If only one person is in the cab, are hand signals still required?
A: If the operator has a clear, unobstructed view of the load throughout the entire lift, a dedicated signal person is not required. However, if there are blind spots, multiple workers involved, or the load moves out of the operator's line of sight, a certified signal person (Q1 certificate) must be on site. The signal person and the operator must use the same hand signal standard.
Q: How do I know when wind speeds reach Force 6? What if the site doesn't have an Anemometer?
A: Force 6 wind equals a wind speed of 13.8 m/s. A quick field check: large tree branches sway, power lines hum, and it's difficult to hold an umbrella open. Outdoor cranes must be equipped with an Anemometer (mandatory under ISO 4301 Crane Design Standard). When wind speed exceeds the limit, the Audible and Visual Alarm sounds and the crane automatically shuts down.
Q: What if my operator's license has expired? Who is responsible if an accident happens?
A: Operating with an expired license is equivalent to operating without a license and is a serious violation. If an accident occurs, both the operator and the company's management will be penalized.
