ISO 8566-5:2010 Crane Cab Standard: Ergonomic & Safety

ISO 8566-5:2010 "Cranes — Cabins — Part 5: Overhead Travelling Cranes" is the dedicated standard for overhead crane operator cabs. Building on the general principles of ISO 8566-1, it specifies cabin dimensions, visibility, environmental control, safety facilities, and ergonomic requirements tailored to the operating characteristics of overhead cranes.


Crane Cab Dimensions and Installation Position

ISO 8566-5:2010 sets the minimum internal dimensions for overhead crane operator cabs. For standing operation, the cab must provide a clear height of at least 1900 mm, a clear width of at least 1000 mm, and a clear depth of at least 1200 mm. For seated operation, the minimums are 1600 mm clear height, 900 mm clear width, and 1100 mm clear depth. The door must have a clear width of at least 500 mm and a clear height of at least 1600 mm, and must open from both inside and outside (sliding or outward-swinging; inward-swinging hinged doors are prohibited). The floor must be fitted with an insulation pad (insulation resistance ≥ 10 MΩ) and treated with anti-slip surfacing. The glazing area of the cab front must be no less than 60% of the front wall area.

Regarding installation position, the cab is typically mounted on one side beneath the crane main girder (on the side opposite the hoisting mechanism for unobstructed hook visibility), and its position must avoid being directly above the crane wheels or rail. The suspension or support structure must be capable of withstanding the cab's dead weight plus a load of 1.5 times the rated load. The cab is attached to the main girder using a four-point suspension system with dual protection from vibration dampers and a safety chain, where the safety chain's load-bearing capacity must be at least 5 times the total cab weight. The clearance between the cab floor and the ground is generally maintained between 6 and 12 m, corresponding to typical overhead crane operating heights.

Visibility and Glazing Requirements

The cab must provide unobstructed forward visibility covering the full hoisting range of the hook (from floor level to maximum height) as well as the complete travel paths of both the bridge and trolley. Horizontal visibility must be at least 180° (forward plus both sides). For blind spots that cannot be viewed directly — such as above the main girder or behind the hoisting mechanism — auxiliary observation devices must be provided, such as mirrors or a camera-and-display system (a rear-view camera with an in-cab display is recommended for overhead cranes).

Glazing must be made of tempered safety glass or laminated safety glass with a minimum thickness of 6 mm, and must offer a light transmittance of at least 85% when new and no less than 75% while in service. The glass must feature anti-glare treatment to reduce reflections from workshop lighting, and the front window must be equipped with a wiper as well as defrosting and demisting provisions. Sunshade curtains must be installed at the top and front of the cab. Glass panels must be sealed to the window frames with sealing strips to prevent water and dust ingress. All glazing must be securely fixed and free from loosening or abnormal noise under rated vibration conditions.

Environmental Control & Operator Comfort

The crane cab's environmental control system maintains an interior temperature between 18–28°C, even when ambient temperatures range from -10°C to +50°C. The air conditioning unit delivers a cooling capacity of ≥3 kW and heating output of ≥2 kW, and is equipped with filtration capable of removing particles ≥10 μm. For ventilation, the cab features a side window that opens to at least 0.2 m² for natural airflow, supplemented by mechanical ventilation achieving ≥10 air changes per hour. Interior noise levels are held to ≤85 dB(A), while task lighting provides ≥150 lux at work surfaces. The operator's seat is a vibration-damping design with 150 mm of fore-aft adjustment, 80 mm of vertical travel, and a reclining backrest adjustable from 90° to 120°, all upholstered in breathable material. Convenience features include integrated cup holder, document tray, and tool storage compartments.


Safety Features & Fall Protection

Safety is built into every Kelude crane cab with two independent exits — a main door plus either a roof hatch or rear door — and an emergency exit measuring at least 500×600 mm that swings outward or slides open. A fire extinguisher (≥2 kg dry chemical or CO₂) is standard, along with two safety belt anchorage points rated at ≥15 kN each.
