ISO 9927-8:2016 Gantry Crane Inspection Procedure Explained

ISO 9927-8:2016 "Cranes — Inspections — Part 8: Gantry Cranes" is the dedicated inspection standard for gantry cranes. It adds inspection items specific to outriggers, gantry connections, and wind anchoring devices.


Inspection Classification and Intervals

Four inspection levels are defined: daily, monthly, annual, and special. For gantry cranes, the following additional checks apply: outrigger visual inspection, wind anchoring device, connection bolts between outriggers and main girder, visual assessment of foundation settlement, and functional check of the anemometer.

Inspection Record Management

Compared to bridge cranes, gantry cranes incorporate additional structural components—namely the gantry structure (outriggers and cross beams), wind anchoring devices, and dedicated travel rail foundations—which introduce a broader set of inspection requirements. Daily inspections focus on gantry-specific items, starting with a visual assessment of the outriggers. This involves checking the vertical alignment of all four legs using a plumb line or theodolite for rapid comparison. Telltale signs of leg inclination include a visible lack of perpendicularity between the leg and the rail, as well as changes in the gap at the connection between the support beam and the leg. The wind anchoring device also requires daily attention. For rail clamps, verify that the jaws open and close freely and that, when engaged, they seat tightly against the rail head—a 0.5mm feeler gauge should not pass through the gap. For pin-type anchors, the anchor pin must insert smoothly into the anchor seat bore without visible lateral play once seated. Windproof cables should be tensioned appropriately; when lifted by hand at the midpoint, the deflection should not exceed 2%–3% of the cable length.

Monthly periodic inspections for gantry cranes include Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) of the welds connecting the outriggers to the main girder. This inspection must cover all load-bearing weld seams, including: the butt welds at the top of the outriggers joining the main girder ends (which transmit the full vertical and horizontal loads from the main girder); the connection welds at the bottom of the outriggers to the lower cross beam (which withstand bending moments and shear forces at the outrigger base); and the T-joint welds between stiffeners and the outrigger web plate (the ends of stiffeners are particularly prone to fatigue cracks). Before MPI, remove paint and corrosion from the weld surface using an angle grinder fitted with a wire wheel or sanding disc until bare metal is exposed. During testing, maintain a magnetic yoke spacing of 75–100mm. Use black non-fluorescent magnetic particles for visual inspection or red fluorescent particles for examination under UV light. A weld is deemed unacceptable if linear defects (cracks, lack of fusion, undercut) measure 2mm or longer, or if rounded defects (porosity, slag inclusion) reach 3mm or more in diameter—such findings require a repair plan.
