ISO 8566-3:2010 Crane Cab Standard for Bridge Cranes Explained

ISO 8566-3:2010 "Cranes — Operator Cabs — Part 3: Overhead Cranes" is the dedicated standard for overhead crane cabs. Building on the general provisions of ISO 8566-1, it specifies cab dimensions, visibility, environmental controls, safety devices, and ergonomic requirements tailored to the rail-traveling characteristics of overhead cranes.

Cab Dimensions and Layout Requirements

Minimum internal dimensions for overhead crane operator cabs: for standing operation, clear height ≥ 1900 mm, clear width ≥ 1000 mm, and clear depth ≥ 1200 mm. For seated operation, clear height ≥ 1600 mm, clear width ≥ 900 mm, and clear depth ≥ 1100 mm. The door must have a clear width of at least 500 mm and a height of at least 1600 mm, open both inward and outward, and be of sliding or outward-swinging type — inward-swinging hinged doors are prohibited. The floor is fitted with an insulation pad with an insulation resistance of ≥ 10 MΩ and a slip-resistant surface. The cab window glass area must be at least 60% of the front wall area. The cab is typically positioned on one side beneath the main girder, opposite the hoisting mechanism, to provide a clear view of the hook. The suspension or support structure must withstand the cab's dead weight plus 1.5 times the rated load. Four-point suspension with vibration dampers plus a safety chain provides dual protection, with the safety chain rated to carry at least 5 times the total cab weight.

Visibility and Glazing Specifications

Visibility requirements for overhead crane operator cabs: forward visibility must cover the full hoisting travel of the hook — from floor level to the highest position — as well as the complete traveling range of the trolley and bridge. Horizontal visibility must be ≥ 180°, spanning the front and both sides. For blind spots that cannot be viewed directly — such as above the main girder or behind the hoisting mechanism — mirrors or a rear-view camera with display must be provided. Glazing must be tempered safety glass or laminated safety glass with a minimum thickness of 6 mm and light transmittance of ≥ 85% for new glass and ≥ 75% for glass in service. Anti-glare treatment is applied to reduce reflection from workshop lighting. A wiper is fitted to the front window, along with defrosting and demisting equipment. Sunshade curtains are installed at the top and front of the cab. Glass is sealed to the window frame with sealant, firmly fixed with no looseness or abnormal noise.

Climate Control & Safety Features

The air conditioning system maintains the cab interior at 18–28°C, operating within an ambient temperature range of –10°C to +50°C. Cooling capacity is ≥3 kW, heating ≥2 kW, and filtration captures particles down to 10 μm. Natural ventilation is provided by side windows that open to at least 0.2 m², supplemented by mechanical ventilation achieving ≥10 air changes per hour. Noise levels are kept at or below 85 dB(A), with work-surface lighting of ≥150 lux. The vibration-damping seat adjusts 150 mm fore-and-aft and 80 mm vertically, with a backrest reclining from 90° to 120°, all covered in breathable material. Two independent exits are provided—a main door plus either a roof hatch or rear emergency exit measuring at least 500 × 600 mm, both opening outward. A dry-chemical fire extinguisher of ≥2 kg is standard. Safety belt anchor points number at least two, each rated for 15 kN. Overhead protection consists of steel plate ≥3 mm thick or an integrated protective canopy. Kelude Heavy Industry designs and manufactures its bridge crane operator cabs in accordance with ISO 8566-3.

FAQ

Q: What are the minimum dimensions for a bridge crane operator cab?

A: For standing operation: minimum clear height of 1900 mm, minimum clear width of 1000 mm, and minimum clear depth of 1200 mm. For seated operation: minimum clear height of 1600 mm, minimum clear width of 900 mm, and minimum clear depth of 1100 mm. The door must be at least 500 × 1600 mm and openable from both inside and outside. Floor insulation resistance: ≥10 MΩ.

Q: What are the visibility requirements for the operator cab?

A: The forward view must cover the full hook travel (from floor to maximum height) as well as the complete travel of both the trolley and the bridge. Horizontal field of vision: ≥180°. Blind spots are covered by cameras with displays. Glazing must be tempered or laminated, at least 6 mm thick, with light transmittance of ≥85% (new) and ≥75% (in service). Wiper, defroster, and sunshade curtain are included.

Q: What safety equipment is installed in the cab?

A: Two independent exits (main door plus roof hatch or rear door), a fire extinguisher of at least 2 kg, at least two safety belt anchor points (each rated ≥15 kN), and a falling-object protection roof plate of at least 3 mm thickness. Communication equipment includes an intercom system and a blind-spot monitoring display.

Q: How does Kelude control the environment inside the cab?

A: Air conditioning maintains 18–28 °C for ambient temperatures from −10 °C to +50 °C. Noise level: ≤85 dB(A). Lighting: ≥150 lux. The vibration-damping seat adjusts 150 mm fore-and-aft and 80 mm vertically. Designed and manufactured in full compliance with ISO 8566-3, with a complete standard configuration.
